Read about nine print / packaging companies from around New Zealand that have implemented a range of measures to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Since signing the NZ Packaging Accord in 2004 the paper sector has exceeded its paper recycling target of 70% - an outstanding achievement. This publication tells the stories from behind the scenes, of NZPPA members that working towards greater environmental sustainability.

PACNZ praises 'Paper Sector' on its recycling achievements

At the recent Packaging Council of NZ AGM, the 'Paper Sector' received a special mention in regards to having achieved a 72% paper recycling rate. It was also mentioned that the paper sector was the first and only sector (at this stage in 2006) to complete its mass balance, having again reached 72%. Praise was given for the great effort required to maintain this level.

Murray Parrish was re-elected as the NZPPA representative on the PACNZ Board.

Environmental Sustainability Audit

NZPPA members are currently participating in a project linked to meeting the targets set for the Paper Sector under the Packaging Accord. A Code of Practice has been developed, and the companies are developing individual Action Plans to identify what they have done and what they are planning to do over the next 12 months to support environmental sustainability.

To assist with this, a Environmental Sustainability Audit Tool/Worksheet and Action Plan Template have been developed. For a copy of the Audit Tool click here, or the Action Plan click here. A report on "Best Practice" will be produced and available later in the year.

Packaging Accord celebrates first year

A positive year for the paperboard packaging sector has seen it achieve a 72% paper recycling rate, exceeding the target of 70% in the 12 months since the Packaging Accord was signed. This result is consistent with the most successful international paperboard sector recycling achievements.

New Zealand Paperboard Packaging Association (NZPPA) President Bill Berry signed the Packaging Accord on behalf of the paper sector on 10 August 2004. The Packaging Accord, which has a five-year duration, is a voluntary industry and government initiative to make more sustainable use of packaging.

The target met by the paperboard packaging sector is one of several to be met before 2008 by different sectors within the packaging industry. These sectors include paper, plastic, glass, aluminium and steel. Having achieved one of its 2008 targets in the first year, and being the only sector to do so, the challenge will be for the paper sector to maintain and improve upon its achievement in the next three years.

The Packaging Council of New Zealand recently released its Year One Progress Report, which summarises each sector's performance in meeting their targets over the first year of the Packaging Accord. Contact Ashley Chisholm (ashley@printnz.co.nz) for a copy of this report.

NZPPA President Bill Berry says while he didn't expect the paper sector to achieve this target so soon, there is a greater awareness out there of the need for recycling. This is something to be further encouraged in the year ahead.

Code of Practice handbook now available

NZPPA is a signatory to the New Zealand Packaging Accord signed last year.
