Earn while you learn in a great industry

School leavers can enter Modern Apprenticeship programmes designed especially for young people. There are also apprenticeships and other training programmes available for people of all ages.

An experienced printer can earn high wages. Please note: some training programmes require normal colour vision.

Right now there are more than 500 men and women completing their Apprenticeship and National Certificate qualifications and over 1,200 printing companies in business around New Zealand.

Getting Started

If you are at high school talk with your careers advisor about a Modern Apprenticeship in printing or packaging and other training options such as the Gateway programme.

If you have left school prepare your CV and ring or visit local printing and packaging companies to see if they have a job or apprenticeship available, or even work experience. This will give you an idea of whether this industry is definitely for you and may lead to an offer of work or an apprenticeship.

In the printing industry you learn on-the-job. This means you need to find a job and have an employer who is willing to put you through training (an apprenticeship). The employer will then contact PrintNZ Training who organise the paperwork, training manuals and assessments, and provide you with a Training Liaison Officer to help steer you through your apprenticeship.

Modern Apprenticeships

Modern Apprenticeships are a great way for 16 to 21 year olds to get on-the-job training while getting paid and studying towards their National Certificate apprenticeship. Set up by the Government, these apprenticeships aim to encourage more young people into trade jobs and usually take around three years to complete, although this time can vary.

Why Train?

  • No student loan
  • Earn while you learn and receive good money once you are qualified
  • Receive support from your employer and Training Liaison Officer
  • Gain an internationally recognised qualification
  • Learn a wide range of important skills to help you in the workplace. These include problem solving, good communication skills, teamwork and the ability to use new technology
  • Have the skills to one day own your own business or work in a management role. PrintNZ Training has a Diploma in Print Management training programme that will help you achieve this goal.
