Members of the NZ Paper Forum and the NZ Paperboard Packaging Association were given the chance to tour Visy's new Material Recovery Facility in Auckland during a joint meeting of the two organisations on December 4, 2008.

The state of the art recycling plant is able to process 23 tonnes of material per hour, the equivalent of 75,000 tonnes of material each year. Of this, some 47% is paper - an important example of how the paper and paperboard industries are addressing the challenge of becoming more sustainable.

During the meeting, the 26 association members were also addressed by Foodstuffs Ltd managing director Tony Carter, who outlined how his company's environmental policy is increasing savings as well as meeting customer expectations and reducing the firm's carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, a growth in trainee numbers in the paperboard packaging industry is being welcomed by PrintNZ general manager Ashley Chisholm.

"We are pleased to see an increase in trainees in the fibreboard sector to around 90 trainees," he says. "This makes up some 15% of all trainees in the printing and allied industries and represents an increase of 200% since December 2003."
