Spotlight focuses on NZ packaging business

A major feature in an internationally-published magazine is shining the spotlight on a niche Christchurch packaging company and the scenic landscape of New Zealand.

Family-owned business Pak World is the first kiwi business to be selected by multi-million dollar press manufacturer Heidelberg to feature in its customer magazine (August 2007 issue), which is printed in Germany with 130,000 copies circulated to 90 countries worldwide.

Pak World supplies a wide range of eye-catching paperboard packaging solutions for local, national and international brands and is run by brothers Jonathan and Chris Flett with a staff of 27.

Jonathan says three journalists from Germany and two photographers from New York city flew into Christchurch earlier this year expecting to write a one-page story on a small print shop. This has now turned into a front and back cover spread, together with a 12-page feature article, including stunning photography of snow-clad mountains and sunset-lit horizons in amongst print shop images. The photographer ran out of film while on the photo shoot as a result of under estimating Pak World and the stunning New Zealand landscape.

“On their arrival to New Zealand we treated our guests to a trip out to Glenfalloch High Country Station and lodge, which is the base for Methven heli ski in the winter. We wanted to give our guests a unique kiwi experience and show them what New Zealand has to offer.”

While time was spent showing the appreciative visitors around the scenic South Island, providing them with a solid overview of Pak World and its success to date was the key mission of the trip.

Over recent years Pak World has solidly invested in Heidelberg technology in its pre-press, printing and finishing departments. Their investment in a Speedmaster CD 74 has doubled sales since its installation. Investment in technology and staff – Pak World strongly supports apprenticeship training – is reaping rewards for the Christchurch business, which provides packaging for chocolates, fine wines, beauty products and many other items for national and international distribution.

Pak World has a strong “people focus”, often getting in behind start-up businesses with a principle of never turning a customer away.

Jonathan says continuing to add value for customers’, achieving business growth and possible future acquisition are all on the cards for Pak World’s future. With the help of international exposure, that future can only be bright.
