What Do Your Customers Think About Print?
As part of the ongoing objective to raise the profile of print, PrintNZ has conducted external research into the peceptions of print.  This research has included stakeholders in the industry, print buyers/Government/corporate buyers and consumers.

We are holding a series of seminars in each of the regions to put the results of this research in front of you and discuss how this information can be used to help the industry raise awareness of how effective and efficient print is as a communication tool.

In addition these meetings will talk about the recently approved changes to the Pride In Print Awards programme for 2010.  Come along and find out what's changed and how it will benefit the Awards programme and the industry as a whole.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AWARD WINNING APPRENTICES
Congratulations to two of our young apprentices who have won international awards in the last two weeks.  This is an outstanding achievement for everyone - the apprentices themselves, the companies that have trained them, and our industry.

Canterbury Printer wins Medal of Excellence at WorldSkills

Royce Richards from Rainbow Print Group has brought home a Medal of Excellence from the WorldSkills competition held in Calgary last week.  This is an international competition that saw 960 competitors from 49 countries compete across a wide range of trade based skills. Royce's medal puts him in the top 25% of competitors across all trades and is a huge achievement.

Grant Letfus travelled to Canada with Royce as a judge.  Grant said "it was a challenging international competition with extremely high standards and Royce was well deserving of his medal.  His printing was simply brilliant."

Royce has been preparing for the event since he won the New Zealand competition last year.  As well as going about his normal duties at Rainbow Print Group he has spent time refining his skills in the other areas they are tested on including ink mixing, guillotining and using a densitometer.  Our thanks go to all the people that have been involved in Royce's training, particularly Heidelberg and Logick Graphics for their added assistance.

Royce was able to travel up to Canada thanks to the very generous sponsorship of
BJ Ball Papers and Trust4Skills.

Waikato Printer wins Trans-Tasman Flexo Apprentice of the Year Award
Jeremy Hancock of Convex Plastics in Hamilton was named ANZFTA (flexographic) Apprentice of the Year on 31 August.

Jeremy was nominated for the Australia New Zealand Flexographic Technical Assn award by PrintNZ Training after completing his apprenticeship in August 2008. Jeremy achieved "excellent" passes for most of his assignments and has shown a strong commitment and enthusiasm for his training.

Jeremy was up against three Aussie finalists, who all had to write to the judges saying why they should win and then attend an interview for the award. Jeremy is the third Kiwi to have won over recent years.

His prize is a trip to America to the Flexographic Technical Association Forum next year. He will also return to Sydney for next year's ANZFTA forum to deliver a report on his trip.

Rules Change for Use of Mobile Phones in Vehicles
From 1 November it will be illegal to talk on a hand held mobile phone while driving a vehicle.  Businesses will need to consider how this affects their employees that are on the road, and either provide hands free kits or ban their use while driving.  It will also be important to put policies in place to ensure that your staff understand the restrictions, will abide by the policy and will be personally responsible for the consequences if they breach the legislation.  Please talk to me, Heather or Glenda if you have any questions about this.
