New President for PrintNZ
At the PrintNZ AGM held in April John Boyle was
elected as President of PrintNZ who takes over this role from Warren
Leslie. John is co-owner of Rainbow Print Group based in
Christchurch and has been a member of the Mainland Executive since 2005 and

introduced, including the launching of the Part Of Life campaign.

FUJI XEROX HEIDELBERG SPICERS PAPER HOSTMANN-STEINBERG NZ
A Story From Ipex with a Difference.....
Joan Grace was visiting Ipex last week along
with a number of other Kiwis, and took time out to visit another show
nearby and sent in this story....
"Today as I left IPEX I did something I have been wanting to do
for some time. While IPEX is busy in Halls 6-20 of the NEC in Birmingham,
life continues in the other parts of the complex as well.
I called in to Hall 5 where there was a "Baby Show" going
on. This event, replicated across the world, is billed as an
"essential part of having a baby". The show included all of the
usual suspects for such an event - strollers, nursery furniture, baby food,
safety equipment and so on. There were also the seminars and advice that
every new parent would want. So why did I go?
In Halls 6-20 our industry was showcasing to itself how to produce
the best products for our customers. In Hall 5 our customers were
showcasing their world using products produced from all of ours.
It was heartening to see thousands of people leaving the baby show
with their printed materials and products. As I looked in Hall 5 I asked
myself "how much of this print is under threat?" I think the
answer is "very little".
All of the exhibitors were using business cards, catalogues, display
advertising, packaging and letterhead. All too had websites with printed
material pushing people to seek further information and make more purchases
from those sites - with those purchases in turn using more print as they
are dispatched.
Our Part of Life campaign is about getting people like the visitors
to the baby show to realise that they are using print - that it is essential
for them to be able to make informed decisions about what products and
services they use day to day. It is also about us having more confidence in
what we do - to take pride in the essential part that our industry plays
for all businesses in the economy.”
Scam Back Again
Be careful of anyone looking to print flyers
for "Stop Child Labour" offering to pay by credit card. This is
the return of a scam that was around a couple of years ago - but seems to
have resurfaced with a few of our members over the last month.
The Cost of Getting it Wrong...
The number of Personal Grievance claims rose 11% last year and the average
total cost to an employer when they lost a claim against them was
$33,046. The average cost of a successful defence was $9617. Win or
lose, a personal grievance has costs associated with it.
Make sure you get the process right - talking
to PrintNZ staff before you deal with any employment related
matters could save you both time and money. This advice is
provided as part of your membership subscription so there is no cost for
picking up the phone and talking to us - and it may save you the cost of a
year or more's subscription.
Heidelberg Shield 2010 - Huntingtdale
Golf Club - Melbourne
This event will be held on 14/15 October in Melbourne with the Shield game
being played at Huntingdale, home of the Australian Open. We will
once again be looking for two players to represent the New Zealand
printing industry, and we are also hoping to take with us a team of
supporters that are keen to join in and play. Please email ruth.cobb@printnz.co.nz
if you wish to put your name forward for the PrintNZ team of two, or if you
are interested in joining the group for two days of golf.
Carbon
Footprinting in MIS System
Printers who want to
enhance their profitability and win new business whilst helping the
environment will benefit from the new "Green" features
of the Quote & Print MIS Software.
Q&P will enable them to identify and improve their carbon
footprint, energy efficiency and materials usage on a stock-by-stock,
job-by-job and whole-company basis, with a direct impact on their bottom
line as well as their customers' perceptions.
"Printers joining a certified paper scheme for
environmental sustainability - and to win government and corporate tenders
- will benefit from full FSC / PEFC Chain of Custody capture, tracking
and auditing features. All of this information can easily be included in
user-definable quote letters, job tickets and reports at the press of a
button, saving hours of work otherwise" said NZ Distributor Rob
Taylor.
From an FSC / PEFC certified printer who uses Q&P:
"You don't have to be a
tree-hugging greenie to want to account for and reduce your environmental
impact, plus it makes good business sense. Sustainable printing is
fast becoming a requirement for corporate and government accounts, but
words and logos aren't enough - you have to be able to provide solid
data.
Q&P gives us the tools to do that, plus
they have taken on board our ideas as to further requirements to keep us
ahead of the pack".
(Pat
Leitch, Centurion Print Ltd, Auckland).
